Glenmore Devon Stud – R & P O’Leary Richard and Pat are 4th generation farmers. They also have off farm incomes from the professions, accounting and teaching. Richard has a local accountancy practice, O'Leary Partners Pty Ltd and Pat has a consultancy business in teaching, training and workplace assessment. His company is Torque & Traction Action Pty Ltd. Glenmore Devon Stud located at 876 Smiths Creek Road, Kundabung NSW 2441, has been in family hands since 1907. The property sits in the Caswells Creek valley on the northern slopes of Cooperabung range midway between Port Macquarie and Kempsey.
Even coastal farms with good average rainfall have been affected by the drought as is the case elsewhere in eastern Australia. Devon cattle have been on Glenmore since the late 1930’s. A 28 cow dairy with some Devon milkers is where it all started. Over the years commercial Devons and cross breed Santa Gertrudis cattle have grazed on the soft country flats and timbered slopes of Glenmore. Country ranges from 53 metres to 212 metres above sea level. The 279 Ha farm consists of 64 Ha pasture improved, 215 Ha timbered country. In recent times Richard and Pat have developed the Devon Cattle Stud. They started with 16 cows – generation A classification and pure Devon bull Cataneal Duke M14062 K13. The herd now has 9 different sire lines. Palinga Paua VREV93 (known as Kev), lead stud bull was born 1st September 2000 and has been awarded the following titles:
Purchased on 20/09/2002, Kev has not been shown since purchase date because of herd requirements. It is planned that the stud will have 90 pure Devon and Fullblood breeders, at present breeders total 43. Yearling bulls have been selling well into the coastal hobby farm market and larger commercial breeders. Devon cattle have good temperament, can be grown to any market, fatten well on grass, produce good milk for calves and when killed, the red ruby beef is tender and tastes as beef should taste.
